To whom would you recommend this book? Anyone looking for new alphabet books, especially those with diverse characters and a positive window into a Black family’s life. Will the book outlive Lil Nas’s current celebrity status? Who knows? Those hoping for insight into the real childhood or adult life of Lil Nas will be disappointed this is not a biography. The reliance on day-in-the-life for an alphabet story breaks no new ground, but it’s very cheerful. Nas definitely looks like a comic book hero.Īnything you didn’t like about it? No. The artwork is bold and cartoonish, with little adherence to the real world. Although Nas starts out in comfy blue jammies, he’s soon rocking his signature style and is shown in a very fancy hot pink rig, complete with matching hat and Day-Glo cowboy boots. In this idyllic country-western world, Nas lives in a little white farmhouse with Mom, Dad, three siblings and his pony pal Panini (shoutout to that and another single, “Old Town Road” in the text). Lil Nas tells his story in first-person, sing-song prose, starting with A for adventure and ending with Z for bedtime. What did you like about the book? This bright, colorful ABC book features easy text that walks readers through a day in a little cowboy’s life. Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 4 C is for Country by Lil Nas X, illustrated by Theodore Taylor III, Random House, 9780593300787, 2021
